How To Perform A Patch Test

As parents we want to protect and care for our little one's natural hair and skin. We can guarantee that Reagan Sanai products are formulated with all natural and organic ingredients. However, It's great practice to perform a patch test at home, to determine if your child has skin sensitivities to any product ingredients. Patch testing involves applying a small amount of product to the skin and leaving it on to see if a reaction develops.

How to perform a patch test

The American Academy of Dermatology, recommends the following steps for patch testing a new product:

  1. Apply the product to a small patch of skin where your child is unlikely to accidentally wash or rub it away. Good areas may include the inside of the arm or bend of the elbow. You should apply the product as thickly as you would when using it regularly.
  2. Leave the product on the patch of skin for as long as it would normally be on the skin. If testing a product that would usually be washed off, such as our Avocado and Banana Deep Conditioner, you should keep the patch on for up to 15 minutes or as long as the instructions advise.
  3. Repeat the patch test twice a day. A reaction may not happen immediately, so it is important to continue applying the product for at least 24-48 hours.
  4. If your child's skin reacts to the product, you should wash it off as soon as possible and discontinue use.

Symptoms to look out for

The symptoms of a skin reaction can vary depending on the product, where a you apply it, how often you use it, and how long it remains on the skin. A skin reaction can cause:

  • A rash which may present as dry, dull, and scaly
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Blistering
  • Swelling

As your child matures and grows, their skin also changes. We hope that by reading this, you have a understanding on why a patch test should be performed.
